Cornelius Postma submitted his appraisal of the Schloss collection to Lefranc. In his letter, he indicated that he had appraised 320 paintings with the help of Bazin and Huyghe.
He, Bazin and Huyghe all agreed that 21 paintings had dubious attributions, a view later endorsed by Göpel and Lohse. This group included works by Rembrandt (4), Brouwer (2), Frans Hals (2), Velazquez (1), and Rubens (1). Postma rejected any responsibility for the estimates given for the 21 paintings. His estimates were based on going rates in Holland, Germany, the UK and the USA, main markets for Dutch Old Masters while Huyghe checked these prices in the Louvre’s extensive indexes on each artist represented in the Schloss collection.
Postma received 2,066,830 francs for his appraisal services.
