Georges Wildenstein was a French art dealer, art historian, art critic and editor of art magazines. After the death of his father Nathan Wildenstein in 1934, he directed the Wildenstein & Company galleries in Paris, London and New York. In November 1940, he emigrated with his son, Daniel, to the United States, leaving behind Roger Dequoy to manage the Paris gallery in his absence. Dequoy actively worked with the German authorities and their agents on the wartime art market, even offering to aryanize the Wildenstein gallery in 1942 with the support of Karl Haberstock, one of Georges Wildenstein’s close contacts in the German art world.
