Alexis Febvre was a French art dealer, public sales specialist, appraiser and collector. His daughter was married to Georges Édouard Warneck. There are 205 digitised sales catalogues recorded in the Bibliothèque Nationale database (BnF Gallica) which pertain to Alexis Febvre and which cover the years 1850 to 1871. Most of the auctions were conducted at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris from 1854 on. Around 1870, Warneck began assisting Febvre in providing art expertise at auctions, such the Otto Mündler estate sale on 27 November 1871 at the Hôtel Drouot. Apart from appraisal services at public sales, Febvre produced content for auction catalogues and their distribution.
According to Clotilde Brière-Misme, Alexis Febvre is listed as** **a former owner of A woman reading by Jacobus Vrel. The painting was acquired by Adolphe Schloss at least before 1903 and sold during his lifetime. Febvre’s collection was auctioned at Hôtel Drouot 17-20 April 1882, but the Vrel painting was not included in the sale. In 1883, the British Museum acquired thirteen prints that had been auctioned at the Febvre estate sale in 1882.
